Most who survived the virus have turned into mindless creatures called "Rabids", beings that only seek to kill their prey, regardless of whether it is a vampire or human. Some humans survive outside of the rule of vampires, but are considered to be Unregistered and possess none of the protection that having a vampire master might give. Allison is one of these Unregistered people. She can remain in the city and doesn't have to give blood to the vampires, but still faces starvation and violence from opposing Unregistered gangs. Allison is later attacked by Rabids after an attempt to retrieve food with her gang (Allison, Stick, Rat and Lucas). Rat and Lucas are killed, and only Stick managing to flee with Allison's help (drawing the Rabids away). Allison is rescued - from being gorged to death in the stomach - by Kanin, a vampire that offers to either turn her or let her die. She accepts his offer to turn her and he trains her on how to feed without killing and how to fight using a katana-how to become a vampire without giving completely in to the monster. The learning process is long and during one of their outings they go through Sector four- Allison's old home. Kanin tells Allison not to get attached to humans and to leave Stick alone. Allison didn't listen and as soon as Kanin turned his back she ran off to find Stick. Allie - Allison - found Stick with a new gang, but soon after he found out what she was and ran back to his new gang. Allie went back to the hospital where she was learning how to become a vampire. Kanin knew exactly what she was doing and though that it was the perfect example to not trust humans. Kanin and Allison eventually get drawn into a battle with Sarren, them only escaping because of the damage Allison done to him - stabbed him in the eye - which she is sure he most likely will not forget. They came to the conclusion that Allison must of let slip a little hint of where she and Kanin were hiding out and he must have reported it. Later in the story Allie encounters a group of humans and is eager to join them. She falls in love with a human boy in the group named Zeke. When he founds out that she is a vampire he says he will kill her if they ever meet again. A few chapters later they meet up again when he is injured and needs help rescuing his group which has been kidnapped by raiders. They do save everyone except Darren and Jebbidiah. Darren was Zeke's best friend. Jebbidiah was the leader of the group. This group was heading to Eden a place they have been searching for 3-4 years.
